About
Tapestries
In each place we visit we are creating memories and leaving our marks for others to read. Marks which symbolise a layering of both current and past experiences. In my work i explore the designs and motifs that reflect the traditional and contemporary feel of a place. I am interested in the historical narrative value of tapestry and how a modern story can be told using a traditional skill.
The woven nature of tapestries has always fascinated me. A painting can be woven in detail with subtle differences in shading and colour but it can also be sculptural. I use a range of materials and techniques for their textural qualities whilst also using colour and pattern to enliven my work.
Background
My interest in tapestry began as a teenager through designing and making hand stitched tapestry sets. Largely influenced by a vibrant adolescence, my designs were an eclectic mix of imagery but I found the ‘painting by numbers’ style of work frustrating which led me to hand woven tapestry.
At 23 I gained a BA Honours in Constructed textiles specialising in Woven Tapestry. I spent 4 summers travelling through South America, South East Asia, Morocco and Europe documenting my experiences through notes and drawings. Returning to the Uk I created my first set of tapestries based upon my travels, predominantly focussing upon South America which held a wealth of images, colour and historical interest.
In 2000 I began to teach art and textiles at secondary schools which I absolutely loved but I found left little time for my own creativity. After 15 years I have 3 children whom are all now at school and finally I am able to work full-time as a Tapestry artist.
Current
Currently a mixture of street art, global issues and historical textiles dominate my tapestries. I am now exhibiting my woven tapestries internationally and have been shortlisted for several prizes whilst also winning a Curators award for my work in Heallreaf 3. Working from my studio in Godalming, Surrey, I am also available for small and large scale commissions. If interested in commissioning an original artwork, please use the contact page
